Hankook Tire has been monitoring American driving behaviors since 2014 through the Hankook Tire Gauge Index. In its 10th year, the survey highlights trends in hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) ownership, perceptions of car technology, vehicle maintenance, and driving behavior.
Electric vehicles gain traction
American attitudes toward hybrid and EVs have shifted in recent years, with a rise in EV adoption and changing consumer priorities, according to Hankook’s Gauge Index.
- Hankook reports that 20% of consumers plan to buy or lease an EV within the next year, up from 8% in 2022;
- Millennials are leading in considering hybrid and EV ownership at 36%, followed by Gen X at 35% and Gen Z at 32%;
- While gas savings remain an appealing benefit, the percentage citing this has declined from 58% in 2022 to 36% in 2024. Other factors like environmental impact (18%) and technology (10%) are also appealing, Hankook data found;
- Only slightly more than one-third (35%) of respondents believe EVs perform better than gas-engine vehicles, while 45% felt they handle similarly.
Car technology and driving behavior
Advanced car technologies like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control have influenced driver interactions and attitudes, Hankook said.
- Three in 10 respondents believe car technology helps them feel safer, though it doesn’t necessarily alter driving habits, Hankook Gauge Index data found. One in 10 drivers finds these technologies distracting;
- 21% of respondents noted that car technology makes them more cautious, with women (26%) more likely than men (17%) to report increased caution;
- In 2024, 57% of drivers see themselves as “thoughtful, responsible, and obedient,” down from 65% in 2014. Road rage triggers include other drivers’ behaviors (53%) and heavy traffic (33%).
Americans are taking charge of car maintenance
According to Hankook Gauge Index data, Americans have shown increased confidence in basic car maintenance tasks over the past decade, while still relying on professionals.
- Confidence in changing a tire rose to 65% from 52% in 2015, and 49% are comfortable changing brake fluid, up from 35%;
- Willingness to invest in cosmetic upgrades rose to 18% from 4% in 2022, and investment in stereo equipment increased to 24% from 5%;
- Despite growing confidence, 45% of Americans rely more on professionals due to increased car technology;
- Willingness to invest in vehicle maintenance has increased, with 54% prioritizing spending on tires and 51% on under-the-hood parts.
“The Hankook Gauge Index has been a trusted source for understanding the evolution in driver attitudes and behaviors over the past decade,” said Brooklyn Emery, brand communications manager of Hankook Tire America Corp. “This consistent insight allows us to anticipate the impact of changes in electric vehicle and automotive technology, reinforcing our commitment to delivering innovative tire solutions – like our iON line, which has been designed specifically for EVs – that prioritize safety and performance. The Hankook Gauge Index survey polled 1,197 randomly selected Americans aged 18 and older from Sept. 27-Oct. 4.
