- Rivian’s first limited edition version of the R1T and R1S is called the California Dune Edition.
- It packs the same goodies as the Adventure Package but adds accessories like recovery boards.
- Despite the goodies, the California Dune Edition costs the same as a Tri-Motor without the Adventure Package.
Rivian has unveiled the first-ever limited edition trim for the R1S electric SUV and R1T battery-powered truck. Dubbed the California Dune Edition, the new variant is available for the tri-motor versions of the two EVs and brings several improvements.
Inspired by the California desert, the limited edition package includes all-new 20-inch all-terrain wheels, a spare tire and a reinforced underbody shield–equipment that’s also offered with the All-Terrain Package. However, new accessories are also thrown into the mix, such as a pair of black Maxtrax recovery boards, a pair of dark crossbars and—in the case of the R1T pickup—a powered tonneau cover.
Customers can choose from two wheel designs–either the newly introduced dark wheels that are available on other trims or the new California Dune finish wheels. Either way, you get California Dune exterior paint, which is a sandy shade of tan.
Inside, the California Dune Edition also introduces an all-new Adventure interior with a “Sandstone”-colored base and “Black Mountain” accents on the top half.
“The design team was inspired by the color and warmth of the beautiful, sun-drenched dunes of Southern California to create our first bespoke, limited-edition variant of the R1 vehicles,” Jeff Hammoud, Rivian’s Chief Design Officer, said in a press release. “In this unique expression, we embraced the balance between the vast, quiet terrain of the California dunes and the desire to create something that is both elevated and refined. It invites you to submit to the elements while offering colors and materials that are easy to clean but look just as good when they aren’t.”
When it’s all said and done, this is a design package–albeit a pretty cool one. The new wheels look like rally wheels and the recovery boards should come in handy when tackling any terrain, not just sand.

The base is what matters most, and that’s the Tri-Motor version of the R1S and R1T. With two electric motors in the rear and one in the front, the most powerful powertrain configuration puts down 850 horsepower and 1,103 pound-feet of torque. Zero to 60 takes 2.9 seconds, per Rivian. With the Adventure Package installed, the EPA-estimated range is 329 miles on a full charge.
The Rivian R1T and R1S California Dune Edition will be on display at SXSW in Austin, Texas, from March 6 to 17 at the Rivian Electric Roadhouse. Additional models will be on display at select Rivian spaces across the country.
The California Dune Edition R1T starts at $99,900 excluding shipping, while the R1S starts at $105,900. That’s an interesting pricing strategy–the limited edition models cost the same as their regular Tri-Motor versions without the $3,950 All-Terrain Package installed. In other words, this new limited edition is cheaper–and cooler–than the regular edition.
