General Motors will invest $888 million in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant in New York to support production of the sixth generation of GM’s V-8 engines. Two years ago, GM announced plans to invest $300 million in the plant for EV production. However, amid a dip in EV sales, GM is shifting to V-8 engine production at its Tonawanda plant.
These V-8 engines power full-size trucks and SUVs. The new generation aims to deliver stronger performance while improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. New combustion and thermal management technologies will drive these benefits, according to GM.
Over the last 15 years, GM says it has strategically invested in its manufacturing facilities. In January 2023, GM announced a $500 million investment in the Flint Engine plant to support sixth-generation V-8 engines. The Tonawanda investment marks GM’s largest-ever single investment in an engine plant. This move also makes Tonawanda the second GM propulsion plant to produce the new engines.
“Our significant investments in GM’s Tonawanda Propulsion plant show our commitment to strengthening American manufacturing and supporting jobs in the U.S.,” said Mary Barra, Chair and CEO. “GM’s Buffalo plant has been in operation for 87 years. It is continuing to innovate the engines we build there to make them more fuel efficient and higher performing, which will help us deliver world-class trucks and SUVs to our customers for years to come.”

GM will install new machinery, equipment, and tools and renovate the facility.
“This investment marks an exciting new chapter for our plant,” said Tara Wasik, plant director at Tonawanda. “For generations, our team has demonstrated its commitment to manufacturing excellence. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue supporting the Western New York community and steadfast in our mission to deliver world-class propulsion systems to our customers.”
Tonawanda Propulsion, represented by UAW Local 774, will continue building the fifth-generation V-8 engine while preparing for the sixth-generation launch in 2027.
