The U.S. Department of Energy‘s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) announced the hydrogen-powered H2Rescue truck set a world record by traveling 1,806 miles on a single hydrogen fill.
H2Rescue truck Record-Setting Journey
The hydrogen-powered truck completed its journey in California, validated by a Guinness World Records adjudicator. It used a Cummins Accelera fuel cell engine, a 250-kilowatt traction motor, and carried 175 kilograms of hydrogen.
The truck consumed 168 kilograms of hydrogen during the trip, maintaining speeds of 50 to 55 mph. It operated in temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Zero-Emissions Achievement
The truck emitted zero pounds of carbon dioxide over the 1,800-mile trip. A standard combustion vehicle would emit 664 pounds.
Efficiency and Environmental Impact of the H2Rescue truck
Hydrogen-powered trucks, like the H2Rescue, could replace 1,825 gallons of fuel each year. The U.S. Department of Energy says they reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 metric tons annually.
Collaborative Innovation
The 33,000-pound demonstration truck resulted from collaboration between Accelera, HFTO, DOE, FEMA, and the U.S. Department of Defense.
