Thomas Built Buses has introduced its second-generation electric school bus, the Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley. This new model builds on the original 2017 launch. It was built by customer feedback and advanced technology to improve efficiency, performance, and serviceability.
Accelera 14Xe eAxle Enhances Efficiency of Thomas Built Buses New Bus
Thomas Built Buses incorporated the 14Xe eAxle from Accelera by Cummins into the second-generation electric school bus. The 14Xe eAxle combines the motor, two-speed transmission, disc brakes, and rear-drive gear set into a compact unit mounted on the rear axle. This design eliminates the traditional driveshaft and delivers power directly to the wheels, improving acceleration, torque, and ride smoothness.
Proterra 800V Battery Optimizes Performance
The second-generation electric school bus utilizes an 800-volt Proterra battery system to improve startability, gradeability, and acceleration. This high-voltage system pairs with the 14Xe eAxle, making the bus well-suited for challenging terrains such as hills and mountains. It also supports additional components like air conditioning and heaters without reducing overall performance.
Streamlined Maintenance Reduces Costs
Thomas Built Buses designed the eAxle to reduce moving parts and centralize major components. A new toe board floor access panel allows technicians to reach high-voltage connectors directly, eliminating the need to remove battery packs. The company also relocated the heating loop surge tank to simplify routine maintenance tasks.
Thomas Built Buses New Bus Design
The second-generation electric school bus offers a new 219-inch wheelbase, which accommodates up to 60 passengers. Shorter wheelbase designs improve maneuverability, especially in tight spaces. The new liquid-crystal display (LCD) digital dash provides drivers with detailed diagnostics and operational data. Future updates can be applied through software upgrades, ensuring the bus evolves with technological advancements.
“We are proud to introduce the second generation of our Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley, a product that reflects our commitment to innovation, meeting the evolving needs of our customers and driving the future of sustainable student transportation,” said T.J. Reed, president and CEO of Thomas Built Buses. “With features that enhance efficiency, performance and serviceability, the new Jouley delivers unmatched value for both current electric bus operators and new adopters who are ready to embrace cleaner, smarter solutions.”
A Step Forward in Sustainable Transportation
“Partnering with Thomas Built Buses to deliver the next-generation eAxle technology for the Jouley is an exciting step to decarbonize commercial transportation,” said Brian Wilson, general manager of eMobility for Accelera. “The 14Xe eAxle elevates expectations for performance, efficiency and serviceability, setting a new standard for the industry. School buses are an ideal application for electrification, and we are excited about the positive impact this innovation will have on communities and the environment.”
Thomas Built Buses has begun producing the second-generation electric school bus with a 219-inch wheelbase. The company plans to release additional wheelbase options in 2025. It continues to support school districts by expanding services. This includes infrastructure consulting to help with the transition to electric buses.
