The upcoming Volvo Cars ES90 features 800V technology that the manufacturer said significantly improves EV capabilities. According to Volvo, this enables faster charging, better efficiency, and greater performance compared to traditional 400V systems.
Key Features of the Volvo ES90 800V Technology
The ES90’s 800V system allows it to charge 300 kilometers (approx. 180 miles) in just 10 minutes at 350 kW fast-charging stations. It offers a driving range of up to 700 kilometers (approx. 430 miles) under the WLTP testing cycle, according to Volvo.
Volvo said it upgraded the ES90’s battery cells, e-motors, and inverters to enhance performance. The high-voltage system provides more power and range while reducing heat generation, allowing for quicker and more efficient charging.
Advanced Battery Management
The ES90 features new in-house battery management software that cuts charging time from 10% to 80% by up to 30%, reducing it to just 20 minutes, Volvo said. Adaptive charging software from Breathe Battery Technologies plays a key role in this improvement, according to Volvo.
Sustainability with Volvo ES90 800V Technology
According to Volvo, the vehicle includes:
- 29% recycled aluminum;
- 18% recycled steel;
- 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials;
- FSC-certified wood panels.
Battery Passport
Volvo said the ES90’s battery passport uses blockchain technology to track raw materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite. This system provides transparency about the CO2 footprint and sourcing of battery materials.
Volvo officially revealed the ES90 on March 5.
The ES90’s WLTP driving range of up to 700 km translates to 740 km (approx. 460 miles) under the CLTC driving cycle in China. This range applies to all-wheel-drive variants with twin motors and a 106 kWh battery.
