The latest Polestar sustainability report highlights major progress in reducing emissions and using sustainable materials. Since 2020, Polestar has lowered its carbon footprint per car sold by 24.7%. The company attributes the reduction to using low-carbon aluminum, improving battery production, switching to 100% renewable electricity in manufacturing, and optimizing logistics with more biofuel-powered shipping.
“Polestar has shown that it is possible to decouple growth from climate impact. In simple terms, we aim to continue to cut emissions as we accelerate sales,” said Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO. “Even though much in the world seems to be going in the wrong direction, we are doubling down on our commitments. When the world zigs, Polestar zags.”
Polestar 0 Project Targets Climate-Neutral Cars
Polestar launched the Polestar 0 project in 2021 to build a climate-neutral car by 2040. Since then, Polestar and its partners have identified key low-carbon solutions. These breakthroughs make it possible to reduce the Polestar 2’s carbon footprint by up to 10 tonnes compared to the original design.
Aluminum and steel production contribute nearly 45% of the Polestar 2’s cradle-to-gate carbon emissions. As the project continues, researchers will shift their focus to other areas that need improvement. Polestar will feed those insights into its Mission 0 House, a Gothenburg-based research hub. Scientists and engineers at the center will explore ways to eliminate emissions in materials and manufacturing processes.
Polestar Pushes Circularity and Material Transparency in Sustainability Report
The Polestar sustainability report also outlines efforts to boost circularity and supply chain transparency. Polestar joined the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) and expanded on-site audits in high-risk areas. It also increased the traceability of raw materials like manganese.
Polestar continues to expand its recycled content across vehicle models. For example, Polestar 4 now includes 10% recycled materials. Polestar’s strategy includes sharing more data and improving the use of sustainable inputs in its supply chain.
