SWTCH Energy announced the launch of SWTCH Cortex, a new solution for electric vehicle (EV) charging. This system combines cloud-based intelligence, onsite computing, wireless connectivity, and integration with property systems to enhance EV charging infrastructure, especially for multifamily and commercial properties, SWTCH said.
The launch is timely as demand for electric vehicles is increasing, projected to reach 14% of U.S. sales in 2025. However, challenges such as insufficient EV-ready parking and high retrofitting costs continue to impede widespread adoption, according to the company.
SWTCH Cortex Utilizes Local Computing
SWTCH said the SWTCH Cortex utilizes an onsite microcomputer to enhance reliability and responsiveness, eliminating dependence on internet connectivity. This ensures continued operation of charging and energy management functions even during internet outages.
Energy Management for SWTCH Cortex Installation
The system allows properties to install numerous EV charging stations without electrical upgrades. It leverages spare capacity on connected electrical panels and processes energy requests with zero-latency onsite computing, according to the company.
SWTCH said this system employs long-range wireless networking technology, reducing the need for extensive Ethernet cabling. This innovation decreases installation time and costs by up to 70%.
Coordination With Electric Heating and Cooling
The system uses predictive modeling and real-time monitoring to optimize energy use, allowing properties to manage EV charging and climate systems.
“Sometimes innovation means taking small steps, and sometimes it means taking a leap,” said Carter Li, CEO of SWTCH Energy. “SWTCH Cortex represents one of the biggest leaps we’ve ever made. With the new technologies we’ve introduced, we’re uniquely positioned to help multifamily and commercial properties save significant time and money in installing and operating EV charging stations.”
